U-Haul Continues to Make C-Store, Gas Station Inroads

Sites in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Colorado add moving services, supplies

ORRTANNA, Pa. -- Tire Corner has been open less than a year but its parent company, Snap n Go convenience store, has served the Orrtanna, Pa., community since 2007. Tire Corner is among several gas stations and convenience stores that have recently partnered with U-Haul.

Manasra Inc. Chevron is located at one of the busiest intersections in Albuquerque, N.M., which offers owner Joe Salem's convenience store a lot of visibility.

Partnering with U-Haul is a change we made to increase our income, and so far it is very good," Salem said. "We have high expectations about it and we look forward to increased business in the future."

And Kipling Conoco has welcomed two U-Haul trucks to its large lot and is looking to expand its fleet as traffic picks up in the coming year.

Purna Gurung, who owns the gas station in Wheat Ridge, Colo., partnered with U-Haul to bring his ever-changing customer base the option of moving equipment.

Kipling Conoco has been open five years. Gurung's initial focus was on his restaurant: Namaste. It is a favorite among locals who savor traditional Indian cuisine. "The chicken curry is always a hit," Gurung said.

All of these locations now offer its customers a variety of moving equipment and supplies including trucks and trailers, after-hours drop-off, rental items, towing equipment and boxes and packing supplies.

Phoenix-based U-Haul was founded by a Navy veteran who grew up during the Depression. Since 1945, U-Haul has served the do-it-yourself mover with a network of more than 16,300 locations in all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. It maintains a rental fleet with approximately 104,000 trucks, 80,000 trailers and 36,000 towing devices. It offers more than 406,000 rooms and 36 million square feet of storage space at nearly 1,100 owned and managed facilities throughout North America. U-Haul is a leading installer of permanent trailer hitches in the automotive aftermarket industry. The company also supplies alternative-fuel for vehicles and backyard barbecues as one of the nation's largest retailers of propane.
