Haribo to Introduce Smurfs Gummi Candy to U.S. Market
Haribo USA's first licensed product being introduced in advance of summer movie
BALTIMORE -- In preparation for the movie Smurfs 2 premiering in theatres this summer, a leading maker of gummi, licorice and marshmallow candy is debuting its first licensed product in the United States, adding Haribo Smurfs to its line of gummi candies sold in America.
Already available in Germany and France, Haribo Smurfs are strawberry and raspberry-flavored gummi candies in the shape of familiar Smurf characters, including Papa Smurf and Smurfette.
The gummies come in the classic Smurfs blue color, with different characters wearing red, white and yellow caps on their heads. The gummies are gluten and fat-free.
Haribo Smurfs will be available for sale to U.S. retailers beginning this March. The candy will be packaged in 4-oz. hanging bags at a suggested retail price of $1.09 to $1.69. Product will be available in stores for consumers in April.
The movie--the second movie in Sony Pictures' Smurfs trilogy--is set for release July 31, 2013.
"Haribo Smurfs have a classic berry flavor and cartoon nostalgia that make them hard to pass up," said Christian Jegen, president of Baltimore-based Haribo of America Inc. "The product has been a favorite in Europe for several years, and we expect it to be a big hit in the U.S., especially as Smurfs fans prepare for this summer's movie."
Other Haribo gummi candy sold in the United States includes Gold-Bears (the original gummi bear), Happy Cola, Twin Cherries, Ginger-Lemon, Peaches and Raspberries.
