CHICAGO -- Hickory Harvest Foods is recalling various nut mixes due to a potential exposure to Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes the infection listeriosis, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled items include:
- 9-ounce Island Fruit Mix in a plastic resealable bag
- 9-ounce Organic Nut Mix in plastic deli tubs
- 1.3-ounce Raw Almonds in plastic tube nut bag
- 1.6-ounce Almond Raisin Mix in plastic tube nut bag
- 1-ounce Natural Pistachios in plastic tube nut bag
- 1.2-ounce Honey Cashews in plastic tube nut bag
These snacks were sold at Liberty Snacks, Heinens, Pilot Flying J Travel Centers, Diamond Gasoline and Petro locations in 33 U.S. states. Hickory Harvest initiated the recall after staff discovered Listeria monocytogenes on a piece of production equipment during a routine examination.
No other Hickory Harvest products are affected by this voluntary recall, and no consumers have fallen ill to date, according to the notice.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with weak immune systems. Early symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The infection can also cause miscarriages, stillbirths and fetal infection in pregnant women. The FDA advises anyone experiencing these problems to seek immediate medical attention.
Chicago-based Hickory Farms produces specialty foods sold in retailers and online. Its products include meat and cheese combinations, fruit baskets and various snacks and candies.
