Hostess Debuts Cake Slices

Coffeehouse-style treats come in two flavors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hostess Brands LLC has launched individual cake slices for breakfast, which are now available at convenience stores nationwide. The treats come in two flavors: Iced Lemon Cake and Cream Cheese Pound Cake, both of which are certified kosher.

The Hostess Iced Lemon Cake—a pound cake made with lemon juice and topped with lemon icing—hits refreshing notes, while the heavier Cream Cheese Pound Cake touches creamy ones. Each portion is wrapped as an individual cake slice, making it ideal for on-the-go consumers in the morning, the company said.

“Our fans now have wider access to their favorite coffee-shop-style cake slices,” said Becky Logan, brand director for breakfast for Hostess. “This is the latest step in Hostess’ continuing focus on our growing breakfast business.”

The cake-slice launch continues an active year for Hostess. In January 2017, CEO William Toler said the company was looking to include bagels, chocolate cake Twinkies, private-label ice cream pints and more to its product repertoire in the future. A few months later, Hostess released its Twinkies Cappuccino in partnership with dispensed-beverage company Kerry Convenience. And in early February 2018, the company acquired assets from specialty-food company Aryzta LLC, relaunched its Suzy Q specialty cakes with a new recipe and released three limited-time-offer (LTO) cupcake flavors: mint chocolate, strawberry and sea salt caramel. Around this same time, the company said it held a 54% market share of the cupcake industry.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Hostess is a packaged-food company that develops, manufactures, markets, sells and distributes baked goods in the United States. It produces a variety of new and classic treats, including Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Ho Hos, Donettes and Hostess Bake Shop and Fruit Pies.
