The muffins will be on c-store shelves early in September.

"We are combining our expertise in muffins with the direct-store service of our independent distributor network to grow sales and profits for the convenience store channel," said Chuck Clevenger, Little Debbie Snacks product manager. "The new muffins are designed specifically for the needs of the convenience store shopper looking for an on-the-go snack."

Muffins are a $155 million dollar segment of the baked sweet goods category in c-stores. McKee Foods cited Nielsen convenience store scanner data indicating modest declines in muffin unit and dollar sales for the 52 weeks ending June 7, 2014.

"The Little Debbie brand is known for making a positive impact on sales and profits when we enter a category. We expect to turn around these category trends with Little Debbie Premium Muffins," said Clevenger.

Little Debbie is a leading snack cake brand and is increasing its presence in the breakfast pastry and cookie categories. More than 138 billion Little Debbie Snacks have been sold since 1960 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and on U.S. military bases worldwide.

Every week, Little Debbie Snacks are baked fresh and delivered from its bakeries. Local independent distributors ensure that the freshest products are available in stores.

McKee Foods, a family bakery with annual sales of about $1.2 billion, is a privately held company based in Collegedale, Tenn. It creates and produces Little Debbie Snacks, Sunbelt Bakery snacks and cereals and Heartland and Fieldstone Bakery food products.
