Companies will begin phasing in more sustainable ingredient

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two snack makers are committing to the use of cage-free eggs in their products.

As part of its ongoing commitment to improve sustainability in its supply chain, Snyder’s-Lance Inc. has announced plans to switch to 100% cage-free eggs for all its products that use eggs. The company will consistently increase its percentage of cage-free eggs each year and reach 100% by the end of 2025.

To meet sustainability goals, Snyder’s-Lance said it is committed to using products and practices that reduce negative effects on the environment. For example, Snyder’s-Lance made a major step forward in its sustainability efforts when it opened the largest ground-based solar farm in Pennsylvania in 2011, which saves 30% of total energy costs in Hanover. Other initiatives have included development of renewable and compostable packaging and more aggressive recycling projects in manufacturing facilities.

Snyder’s-Lance, Charlotte, N.C., manufactures and markets snack foods that include pretzels, sandwich crackers, pretzel crackers, potato chips, cookies, tortilla chips, restaurant style crackers, popcorn, nuts and more under the Snyder’s of Hanover, Lance, Kettle Brand, Kettle, Cape Cod, Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps, Pop Secret, Emerald, Diamond of California, Late July, Krunchers!, Tom’s, Archway, Jays, Stella D’oro, Eatsmart Snacks, O-Ke-Doke and other brands, as well as third-party brands. It distributes products through grocery and mass merchandisers, convenience stores, club stores, foodservice outlets and other channels.

Separately, Otis Spunkmeyer said it is introducing a new line of 20 sweet treats ranging from snack cakes, muffins, cookies and cupcakes.

When developing the recipes for the new line of food, an important differentiator has been the brands commitment to “No Funky Stuff,” which includes honest ingredients. Expanding on the promise to offer better ingredients in the food, Otis Spunkmeyer will be introducing cage-free eggs to its sweets starting with their existing retail line in 2018, and eventually converting all of their sweets–retail and foodservice–to be baked using cage-free eggs by the end of 2023.

Los Angeles-based Otis Spunkmeyer is a leading seller of foodservice and fundraising cookie dough. Aryzta, a global leader in specialty bakery, is based in Zurich, Switzerland.
