The report finds that half of the food given as Christmas gifts is candy, mostly chocolate candy. Cookies are also a popular Christmas gift, 42% report giving cookies. An assortment of other foods, meat, breads, fruits, jams, seafood, etc. [image-nocss] are given by 23% of the respondents; 63% report that the food they gift has a holiday theme or package.
All of this giving of food results in the eating of it. Cookies are the No. 1 snack food traditionally eaten at Christmas, 65% said they eat cookies; 49% reported vegetables as a top snack food traditionally eaten during the holiday season, 48% eat chocolate candy, 46% eat nuts, 47% eat cheese, and 37% eat fresh fruit; 11% of the respondents admit to eating the much-maligned fruit cake.
Other findings of the NPD Christmas Holiday Profile Report include: Food is even involved in Christmas decorating; 15% of respondents who decorate at Christmas said they use candy for holiday decorating. And discount stores rank as the No. 1 place to buy food given as Christmas gifts; the next most popular channel is the supermarket/grocery store.
