Man "overcharged" for cigarettes due to bank error
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Although cigarette taxes have skyrocketed recently, the federal government can't be blamed for everything. A New Hampshire man who said he swiped his debit card at a Manchester Mobil gas station to buy a pack of cigarettes was charged more than $23 quadrillion, according to an Associated Press report.

Josh Muszynski said that he checked his account online a few hours after purchasing the smokes and saw the 17-digit numbera whopping $23,148,855,308,184,500.00.

"I thought my card had been compromised. I thought somebody had bought Europe with my [[image-nocss] debit] card," Muszynski, who recently moved into an apartment to save money, told WMUR-TV. He added that if he had $23 quadrillion, he would give it all away, and maybe also bail out General Motors a few more times.

Muszynski said that after returning to the station, where the clerk was unable to help him, he spent two hours on the phone with Bank of America trying to sort out the problem and the $15 overdraft fee. The bank corrected the error the next day and reversed the fee.
Visa told WMUR late Wednesday that a "temporary programming error" caused the glitch. It said the incident will have no financial impact on cardholders' finances or credit. The company said it regretted the inconvenience to customers and has taken steps to ensure it does not happen again. It also noted that the Mobil gas station is not responsible in any way for the error.
