MINNEAPOLIS -- A recent court order stemming from a 1999 lawsuit will have the major tobacco companies airing “corrective statements” about the effects of using tobacco products in newspaper and television ads.
Altria Group Distribution Co., Richmond, Va., and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Winston-Salem, N.C., will pay for the ads that will begin airing in late November.
The topics of the ads will range from the adverse health effects of smoking and secondhand smoke to the addictiveness of smoking and nicotine.
While retailers have no obligations relating to these ads at this time, tobacco retail group NATO, Minneapolis, is suggesting cashiers be knowledgeable about the tobacco companies’ obligations and to know three things to share with consumers …
