Kennedy Introduces FDA Bill

Tobacco-regulation legislation introduced in Senate
WASHINGTON -- Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) has introduced legislation similar to a bill already passed by the House that gives the federal government the power to regulate tobacco products. Kennedy offered his measure Tuesday night without the fanfare of a press conference that accompanied the introduction of similar bills in previous years, reported The Louisville Courier-Journal.

Kennedy's bill, the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act (S. 982),sets the stage for Senate action on tobacco legislation this month or in June. The measure is expected [image-nocss] to pass with bipartisan support, said the report.

The chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee, Kennedy has scheduled a panel hearing for next Tuesday, May 12, to consider his bill.

The House last month overwhelmingly passed a bill giving the federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) authority over how tobacco products are made, advertised and sold. (Click here for previous CSP Daily News coverage.)

President Barack Obama supports FDA regulation of tobacco, the report said.
