Smoker Friendly Buys Denver Cigar Store

Goals are to expand into metro market and grow share in hand-rolled cigars

BOULDER, Colo. -- Smoker Friendly announced the acquisition of a premium tobacco and cigar store in Denver as a way to expand its footprint in a high-traffic market and grow share in hand-rolled cigars.

With its purchase of Cigars on 6th, 707 E. 6th Ave., Smoker Friendly officials said they would continue to operate the store under the Cigars on 6th name, but will introduce Smoker Friendly branded cigars to the store's mix.

As one of the largest retail tobacco-store operators in the country, Smoker Friendly officials said they are committed to providing the same level of customer service and will maintain the store’s current team of employees.

Officials said Smoker Friendly’s main objectives are to continue to expand its footprint in the Denver market and, more specifically, grow market share with hand-rolled cigars at retail.

“We are very excited about bringing the great premium-cigar business that is established in this store and the unique neighborhood personality that [owner] Dan Dunne created at Cigars on 6th into our portfolio,” said Terry Gallagher Jr., president of Smoker Friendly. “Dan and his team did a great job of creating and building this iconic Denver cigar store. We are proud Dan looked to Smoker Friendly as an acquirer when he was ready to exit the business.”

Gallagher said Smoker Friendly continues to look at other acquisition opportunities in multiple markets as it seeks to grow its retail footprint nationally.

Boulder, Colo.-based Smoker Friendly is the “doing business as” name for The Cigarette Store Corp. (TCSC), a family-owned business. It operates 103 retail outlets with a mix of tobacco stores, cigar lounges, liquor stores and convenience-gasoline sites (under the name Gasamat) in six states. Founded in 1991, TCSC employs more than 500 employees and is the largest distributor of the Smoker Friendly/SF brand of products.
