Survey: Vapers are Using Electronic Cigarettes to Quit Smoking

V2 says poll supports public health claims

MIAMI -- A study of 300 electronic-cigarette consumers supports claims that vaping products are being used as cessation devices. Conducted May 11-12 by electronic cigarette and e-vapor manufacturer V2, the survey showed two-thirds of vapers are using electronic cigarettes to quit smoking, the company said.

When respondents were asked to identify the reasons they use electronic cigarettes:

cigarette vs. vaping
  • 62% said they do so “to quit or abstain from smoking cigarettes.”
  • 38% identified as dual users, vaping e-cigarettes “to obtain nicotine when unable to smoke cigarettes.”
  • 36% said they “preferred the flavors and taste over traditional tobacco cigarettes.”
  • 29% said they did so because e-cigarettes are more “socially acceptable than smoking cigarettes.”

“For most adult smokers, vaporizing devices like electronic cigarettes represent a legitimate alternative to combustible cigarettes,” said Adam Kustin, V2’s vice president of marketing. “Smokers are increasingly shifting away from combustibles in favor of vaping.”

Kustin expressed disappointment in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) “deeming” regulations over electronic cigarettes and vaporizers, especially in the wake of evidence that the products are being used as cessation tools.

“The FDA ruling to regulate e-cigarettes like tobacco products is discouraging,” he said. “Stifling innovation and restricting consumer choice will very possibly drive users back to smoking cigarettes.”
