TPSAC Posts Meeting Materials

Jan. 18-20 meeting to examine nature, impact of dissolvable tobacco use on public health

WASHINGTON-- The Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) has posted materials for the January 18-20, 2012, TPSAC meeting on the nature and impact of use of dissolvable tobacco products on public health.

David Ashley, director of the Office of Science at the Center for Tobacco Products for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), said the information presented at the meeting will aid the committee in producing the required report and recommendations to the Secretary of Health & Human Services (HHS) regarding the issue of the nature and impact of the use of dissolvable tobacco products on public health, including such use among children.

In its review and consideration of recommendations, TPSAC will address the risks and benefits to the population as a whole including users and nonusers of tobacco products, the increased or decreased likelihood that existing users of tobacco products will stop using such products and the increased or decreased likelihood that those who do not use tobacco products will start using such products.

At this meeting, the committee will hear and discuss presentations from the FDA, research institute RTI and various experts on dissolvable tobacco products.

Presentations will be given on the following topics:

  • Use of Swedish oral tobacco and related health effects.
  • Health effects of long term use of therapeutic nicotine replacement therapy.
  • Chemistry and constituents of dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Analysis of constituents and heavy metals found in dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Topography of use of dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Accidental poisoning from tobacco and dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Effects of product packaging.
  • Summary of the peer-reviewed literature on dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Marketing research and marketing practices of dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Behavioral effects of dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Toxicological and physiological effects of dissolvable tobacco products.
  • Youth perception of dissolvable tobacco products.
