Alon Brands Cuts Carbon

Retailer signs on with GreenPrint for reduced-emissions gasoline program

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --Alon Brands, which has nearly 300 7-Eleven branded convenience stores in New Mexico and Texas, has signed on to a reduced-emission gasoline program with GreenPrint LLC, which arranges carbon offsets for gasoline purchases.

Alon will feature the STRIVE reduced emissions fuel program at 122 pumps at 23 of its sites in Albuquerque, N.M.

For each gallon of gasoline sold at participating Alon sites, GreenPrint calculates the vehicle tailpipe emissions and invests in projects that will offset up to 30% of them. For Alon’s STRIVE program, all grades of gasoline are eligible for the offsets, and there is no additional cost to the customer.

“Alon sets itself apart by continuously seeking innovative programs that will ultimately improve customers’ lives and the communities in which they live and serve,” said Jonathan Ketchum, senior vice president of retail for ALON Brands. “When we learned about the opportunity to offer a reduced emissions fuel program, Albuquerque was a natural launch market given its rich ecological footprint.”

STRIVE is similar to GreenPrint LLC’s ZERO Clean Driving program, which arranges offsets for 100% of the carbon emissions related to each gallon of gasoline purchased (depending on the grade). Most recently, Georgia Oil Holdings LLC signed on with a pilot of ZERO at four sites in the Atlanta area.

For both STRIVE and ZERO, GreenPrint invests in local, regional and global projects that have been certified and proven to sequester carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions. Potted trees placed near the gas pumps at the 23 Alon sites participating in the program not only educate customers on how the program works, but also highlight the local carbon-offset groups benefitting from the retailer’s participation: Tree New Mexico and the Arbor Day Foundation.

“We are excited to partner with a brand that so closely aligns to our mission,” said Suzanne Probart, executive director of Tree New Mexico. “The main greenhouse gas that vehicles emit is carbon dioxide. By planting new trees and preserving mature ones, we are able to absorb those harmful gasses while providing shade, preventing erosion and beautifying our community.  STRIVE provides a unique opportunity to get the consumers involved right from the pump.”

“Alon has long invested in Albuquerque, and we are pleased to join them in this process,” said Peter Davis, founder and CEO of Atlanta-based GreenPrint. “As one of the most eco-friendly cities in the U.S., Albuquerque is a perfect market to introduce this socially responsible program bundled with fuel.”

Based in Dallas, Alon Brands markets Alon motor fuel products at more than 800 locations and is the largest 7-Eleven licensee in North America.
