BI-LO Redeems Itself

Grocer relaunches fuelperks! rewards program in Myrtle Beach after glitch
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- BI-LO LLC gave away free gasoline to the first 100 customers yesterday at 3:30 p.m. as part of the company's efforts to relaunch its exclusive fuelperks! program in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Last fall, BI-LO introduced fuelperks! to area residents, offering the opportunity for consumers to reduce the price they pay for gasoline by buying groceries. A technical issue prevented Myrtle Beach customers from redeeming their fuelperks! rewards at all participating stations. The company spent the last few months rectifying the issue, and the program was fully functional [image-nocss] and running smoothly at all participating locations as of April 14.

Partnering with Star 92.1 to spread the word, BI-LO revealed clues on the station's location on the air the days and hours leading up to the giveaway. Customers needed to have their My BI-LO Bonuscard on hand and be one of the first 100 in line to receive a voucher for up to 20 gallons of free gasoline.

"We want to assure our customers that the technical issues have been resolved and that, despite being unable to redeem their rewards for the past few months, their earnings have continued to accrue each time they shopped at BI-LO and are now available for redemption," said Michael Byars, president and CEO of Mauldin, S.C.-based BI-LO. "In the spirit of our commitment to being the store that saves our customers more, we want to thank them for their patience with this 'Free Gas Wednesday' event."

With fuelperks!, every time BI-LO customers make a purchase with their My BI-LO Bonuscard they save money not only on their grocery bill, but at the pump as well. For every $50 a shopper spends at BI-LO, they receive a 5-cents-per-gallon reward applied to their new My BI-LO Bonuscard. The $50 threshold can be achieved through multiple visits to BI-LO, all of which is tracked automatically and in "real time" through the card.

Customers redeem their fuelperks! rewards by swiping their full-size My BI-LO Bonuscard in the card reader at participating stations. The price per gallon on all grades of fuel will automatically roll down by the amount of fuelperks! rewards earned. There is no limit to the amount of fuelperks! rewards a customer can earn. For example, if a shopper or family spends $200 over the course of several weeks or in a single visit, they accumulate a 20-cents-per-gallon reward. The customer can pump up to 20 gallons of gasoline per visit. For instance, with the current gas price at $2.72 per gallon, a fuelperks! redeeming customer would save $4.60 on 20 gallons of gas, paying just $2.52 per gallon.

All Myrtle Beach BI-LO stores are participating in the fuelperks! program.

BI-LO is working with Irving, Texas-based Excentus Corp., the administrators of fuelperks!, to re-launch the program. Through Excentus, BI-LO is working with BP, Exxon and Shell to provide stations close to BI-LO stores.
