Gift Fuels Yule for Southeast Texans

Station lowers pump price as "Secret Santa" pays for more than 750 gallons of gas

FANNETT, Texas -- A Southeast Texan with a tradition of spreading holiday cheer paid for groceries at Market Baskets in Port Neches and Nederland. Then the anonymous donor dropped off a donation that paid for dozens of people to fill up their gas tanks in Fannett, reported WKBMT.

Dozens of cars lined up along Highway 124 on Christmas Eve, all waiting for their turn at the gas pump.

Southeast Texans have seen lines like this before, but the owner of Green Acres Grocery in Fannett, Tom Jenkins, said an act of holiday generosity is what drew the crowd.

"Something good instead of a hurricane. That's when I usually see these long lines," he told the news outlet.

A Secret Santa spreading holiday cheer donated $1,500, which bought more than 750 gallons, filling up 80 gas tanks.

The owner of Green Acres Grocery lowered the cost of unleaded gas to $1.96 a gallon, giving even more drivers a surprise at the pump, said the report.

The generosity also caught on with the Labelle-Fannett Firefighters who manned the gas pumps and Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies showed up to direct traffic, the report said.

The owner of the gas station says the $1.96 gas price for unleaded gas will stay through Christmas. While the convenience store will be closed, drivers can still pay at the pump.

The anonymous donor is no stranger to Southeast Texas, said WKBMT. The person has made similar donations in years past.
