Mihos Takes Over Pumps

Chatham Mobil to be converted to Christy's

CHATHAM, Mass. -- Attendants at a Chatham, Mass., Mobil station are now wearing Christy's of Cape Cod shirts. The Cape-based convenience store company is leasing the gasoline portion of the business from Chatham Mobil owner Five MJ Inc., reported The Cape Cod Chronicle.

"We just stepped into their shoes dispensing gasoline," Christy Mihos, owner of the c-store chain, told the newspaper.

Chatham Mobil had planned to stop dispensing gasoline when its contract with Mobil ran out at the end of the summer. But Mihos, who is planning to purchase the property and convert it to a Christy's [image-nocss] Market, did not want to see the dispensers shut down and agreed to lease that portion of the business. He negotiated a 90-day extension of the contract with Mobil, and discussions are underway about extending the agreement, said the report.

"It has all the benefits of a Christy's, but with Mobil" brand gas, Mihos said. The station honors Stop & Shop gasoline coupons and gives 10 cents off per gallon when customers pay with cash, he said.

Mihos said the station will continue to pump gasoline when Chatham Mobil moves out of the location it has occupied since 1949. Don Gould, a partner in Five MJ, said the company's new vehicle repair facility should be completed within a month. Sale of the property is scheduled to happen November 1, he told the paper.

It is likely that gasoline will be the only thing for sale at the site for a while, said the report, since Mihos has yet to obtain a number of town permits necessary to convert the station to a c-store.

"I'd like to get it all done yesterday," he said.

While the uniforms may be different, the sign won't be changing immediately. "Until the town says we're a Christy's, we're sort of what anybody wants us to be," Mihos said.
