Pilot Flying J Diversifying Business

Acquisition of Western Petroleum opens up energy services channel

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. & VERNAL, Utah -- As part of its growth and diversification strategy, Pilot Flying J has acquired Western Petroleum LLC (formally Western Petroleum Inc.).

As reported in a Morgan Keegan/CSP Daily News Flash, Western Petroleum is a market leader in selling and transporting fuel and lubricants to the oil and gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing industries. It transports and delivers approximately 200 million gallons of fuels, lubes and industrial oils, and it provides both onsite and cardlock fueling services. The company distributes Chevron, Sinclair and Conoco products.

"The acquisition of Western Petroleum's operations and employing Western Petroleum's talented work force is a significant complement to an important aspect of our growth strategy. Western Petroleum's exceptional service mentality has earned a place as a key vendor to some major petroleum and natural gas drilling companies. The company has positioned itself for growth in many of the key geographic regions where hydraulic fracturing and hydrocarbon drilling activities are escalating. Pilot Flying J recognizes the energy services channel as a way to diversify its business while participating in a growth industry," said Pilot Flying J President and CEO Jimmy Haslam.

"Pilot Flying J's core operational competencies should be an immediate enhancement to Western Petroleum's growth strategy and financial performance," he added.

Perry Taylor, Western Petroleum's president and CEO, said "we are extremely excited to become a part of the Pilot Flying J team. They have an excellent reputation in the travel plaza and travel center business. Their expertise in petroleum transportation and fuel acquisition will allow Western Petroleum to increase its ability to service its existing customers, and quickly and efficiently enter new markets."

Western Petroleum will operate as a division of Pilot Flying J and will continue to run under the same leadership, with Perry Taylor, as president and CEO, Samuel Taylor as chief sales and marketing officer, and Janis Kline as CFO.

Founded in 1952 and based in Vernal, Utah, Western Petroleum and it more than 500 employees serve hydrocarbon drilling and fracturing companies, construction companies, mining companies, and farms in the Rocky Mountains, the Northern Plains, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Pennsylvania.

Pilot Flying J is based in Knoxville, Tenn., and has more than 550 retail locations across North America. Pilot Flying J is also one of the nation's largest wholesale fuel providers, delivering more than 500 million gallons of fuel to thousands of customers in 47 states and eight Canadian provinces. The company employs approximately 18,000 people and is the largest operator of travel centers and travel plazas in North America.
