Richard Phipps of Spinx Passes Away

Oil company vet managed real estate for South Carolina-based retailer

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Richard Phipps, vice president of real estate for Enigma Corp., a subsidiary of The Spinx Co., passed away on February 5, reported The Greenville News. At 75, he was still a valuable contributor, mentor and motivator, said the report. He was respected by his peers, revered by his co-workers and had a positive impact on everyone he touched, it added.

When Phipps moved to Greenville, S.C., in 1985, he brought more than 30 years of experience in petroleum marketing with him from Standard Oil of California. He founded a second career with a company [image-nocss] of 15 gas stations. Spartanburg, S.C.-based Spinx has grown to more than 125 outlets today.

Phipps' main responsibilities for Spinx included "the dirt" (site development), and with Enigma, he managed all of the company's real-estate activity, including new site selection, purchasing and sales. He held numerous positions with Spinx over the years.

He is survived by his best friend and wife, Donna; his children, Don Phipps, Kathy Southern and Cheri Scott, along with their spouses, Mary, Bob and Rob; granddaughters, Michele Bailey and Kelsey Pena; and great-grandson, Rolan. Additional California family includes Harland and Vi Phipps, Bob and Roz Phipps, Velma and Gregg Trost, and Darlene and Bill Goucher; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Bertha Phipps.

CSP sends condolences to his family, his friends and his colleagues.
