Sheetz Settles With EPA

Agrees to pay $26,000 over tank violation allegations

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. has agreed to pay about $26,000 to settle allegations it violated underground fuel storage tank violations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday, according to a report in the Pittsburgh Business Times.

According to an EPA complaint, Sheetz failed to immediately investigate and report suspected leaks in 2000 and 2001 from seven 15,000-gallon gasoline and diesel fuel tanks at two stores in Winchester, Va.

After the EPA notified Sheetz about the violations in September 2002, the company [image-nocss] agreed to audit its storage tank leak detection systems at 275 stores in the Aid-Atlantic region, the newspaper said, citing an EPA news release.

Sheetz also agreed to report the violations to the EPA and fix them, the federal agency said.

EPA Mid-Atlantic regional administrator Donald Welsh also said Sheetz agreed to upgrade the storage tank systems, said the report. As part of the settlement, Sheetz did not admit or deny liability for the alleged violations, the report added.
