Clerk accused of letting family, friends fill up for tenth of a cent

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A gas station clerk has been accused of defrauding her employer out of nearly $50,000 by selling fuel to her family and friends for a tenth of a penny a gallon, said an Associated Press report.

South Charleston, W.Va., police arrested 25-year-old Madeline Jordan on Sunday, along with her mother, brother, a cousin and two others, after setting up a sting at the BP station in South Charleston.

The station's owner told police last week he had noticed a significant drop in his income and found receipts that listed the deeply discounted rate.

Police alleged [image-nocss] that for several months Madeline Jordan, 25, had reset the price at the pumps every Sunday morning and allowed people she knew to fill up.

A report by WSAZ-TV said the clerk's friends were lined up even before the station opened at 7:00 a.m., with dozens of gas cans in hand.

Police towed five vehicles from the scene and confiscated all of the gasoline containers.

The owner told police this scam almost put him into bankruptcy, said the report.
