UPDATE: Valero Enters Des Moines Market

New Midwest Rentals opens two of four stations bearing the Valero brand; more to come

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Valero Energy Corp. opened two new gas stations in Des Moines, Iowa, in October; another will be opening soon at the site of a former Infinite gas station that closed last week; and a fourth one is planned, reported the Des Moines Register.

"We have two stores that we have rebranded Valero in Des Moines. These are independently owned jobber sites, which is where Valero's growth in the number of branded locations has been," Valero spokesperson Bill Day told CSP Daily News. "We may add a few more locations in the Des Moines area. We already have a presence in Iowa with four of our 10 ethanol plants in the state."

He added, "Growth in our company-owned Corner Stores has been in size and products offered, not numbers."

Pam Tedesco, who manages the stations, told the newspaper that they were originally built as Kum & Go stores. Tedesco is cleaning up the properties, and she expects they will be improvements to the neighborhoods where they are located.

The stations sell Valero-branded gasoline and, while they are not Valero's company-operated Corner Stores, they do have convenience stores. The Des Moines locations are owned by Cleveland-based New Midwest Rentals LLC, a jobber that owns other stations in Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio, said the report.

The stations will sell beer and wine, but not hard liquor, Tedesco said.

While the Valero gas stations are new in Iowa, the San Antonio-based corporation's stations are familiar in Southern states.

Valero Energy, through its subsidiaries, is an international manufacturer and marketer of transportation fuels, other petrochemical products and power. It employs approximately 22,000 people, and its assets include 16 petroleum refineries with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3 million barrels per day and 10 ethanol plants with a combined production capacity of 1.2 billion gallons per year. Approximately 6,800 retail and branded wholesale outlets carry the Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock and Beacon brands in the United States and the Caribbean; Ultramar in Canada; and Texaco in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
