13th Annual Sheetz Charity Golf Classic Raises Thousands For the Kidz

Marino, Gretzky, Rodman, Theismann lead list of celebrities playing this year

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Dan Marino, Wayne Gretzky, Bo Jackson, Joe Theismann and Dennis Rodman lead the list of celebrities participating in the 13th Annual Sheetz Family Charities For the Kidz Golf Classic, which will be held today, June 13, at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Among others also playing in the event for charity are Pittsburgh Steelers Jack Ham, Mel Blount, Mike Wagner and LC Greenwood.

The annual event is a major fundraising effort for the Sheetz Family Charities benefitting the company's Christmas program for needy children who are identified with the [image-nocss] help of the Salvation Army. Last year, the golf event raised more than $380,000 and was used to brighten Christmas for more than 6,200 children.

Sheetz Family Charities is also supported throughout the year by Sheetz in-store donations, proceeds from Sheetz bottled water sales and other efforts. In 2010, Sheetz raised more than $900,000 for charity.

"With the support of our vendor partners who participate in the golf event, and through the generosity of our great customers year-round, Sheetz Family Charities provides funding for programs that enrich the lives of thousands of children every year in the greater Akron area and across the six states where we have store locations," said president and CEO Stan Sheetz. "Including the proceeds from our golf event, we anticipate that we will raise more than $400,000 for charity in 2011."

Started in 1992, "For The Kidz" was the first charity established by the Altoona, Pa.-based company. That year, Sheetz worked with the Altoona area Salvation Army to brighten Christmas for 12 underprivileged children. Today, hundreds of Sheetz employees across six states work with their local Salvation Army chapters to identify children who may need some help to have any Christmas at all.

"This is one way our employees can truly make a difference in their own communities," added Sheetz. "For us it's about sharing the love with those in need."

Established in 1952 in Altoona, Sheetz Inc. is one of America's fastest growing family-owned and operated convenience store chains, with more than $4.9 billion in revenue for 2010 and more than 13,500 employees. The company operates nearly 400 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. Sheetz provides an award-winning menu of MTO subs, sandwiches and salads, which are ordered through unique touch-screen order point terminals. Sheetz currently ranks on the Best Places to Work list in Ohio and North Carolina and has been on that list in Pennsylvania for eight consecutive years. All Sheetz convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
