ALTOONA, Pa. -- Joe Montana, Hulk Hogan, Barry Sanders, Steve Largent and Bill Cowher topped the list of celebrities who participated in the 14th Annual Sheetz Family Charities "For the Kidz" Golf Classic, held May 21 at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. The event raised an estimated $400,000, which will be used to provide Christmas presents for more than 6,200 children this holiday season in conjunction with the Salvation Army.
Others who played in the event included ESPN football commentator Trey Wingo; Buffalo Bill Bruce Smith; Pittsburgh Steelers Jack Ham, Mel Blount, Mike Wagner and L.C. Greenwood; and Pittsburgh Pirates Rick Reuschel, Jim Rooker and Kent Tekulve.
The annual event is a major fundraising effort for the Sheetz Family Charities and benefits "For the Kidz," the company's Christmas program for underprivileged children. Sheetz Family Charities is also supported throughout the year by Sheetz in-store donations, proceeds from Sheetz bottled water sales and other efforts. Each year, Sheetz donates more than $2.5 million in cash and products to worthwhile community endeavors, including sponsoring Make-A-Wish family trips to Walt Disney World and participating in statewide Special Olympics events.
"With the support of our vendor partners who participate in the golf event, and through the generosity of our great customers year-round, Sheetz Family Charities provides funding for programs that enrich the lives of thousands of children every year across the six states where we have store locations," said president and CEO Stan Sheetz.
Started in 1992, For the Kidz was the first charity established by the Altoona, Pa.-based company. That year, Sheetz worked with the Altoona area Salvation Army to brighten Christmas for 12 deserving children. Today, hundreds of Sheetz employees across six states work with their local Salvation Army chapters to identify children who may need some help to have any Christmas at all.
"This is one way our employees can truly make a difference in their own communities," Stan Sheetz said. "For us, it's about sharing the love with those in need."
Since 1952, Sheetz has grown from a small dairy/deli in Altoona to one of the fastest growing, family-owned convenience stores in the country, with 420 locations across six states--Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina--and more than 15,000 employees.
Established in 1952 in Altoona, Sheetz is one of America's fastest growing family-owned and operated convenience restaurant chains, with more than $5 billion in annual revenue and more than 15,000 employees. Sheetz provides a menu of Made-To-Order (M-T-O) subs, sandwiches and salads, which are ordered through touchscreen terminals. All Sheetz convenience restaurants are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
