13 C-Store Retailers in Fortune 500

Wal-Mart leads the way, but Big Oil grabs three of the top five spots

NEW YORK -- Big Oil didn 't top this year 's Fortune 500 list of the largest companies in the United States, based on revenue. But it did fill four of the top 20 spots. Instead, it was retailing-industry giant Wal-Mart that retained the No. 1 spot in the list from Fortune magazine.

Wal-Mart posted revenues of $378.8 billion last year, which was up 7.9% compared to the previous year.

The second spot was taken by ExxonMobil Corp., which posted revenues of $372.8 billion; however, Exxon Mobil had three times better profit figures ($40.6 billion) compared to Wal-Mart ($12.7 billion), [image-nocss] according to the list.

Fortune magazine noted that Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart has managed to stay at the top for the sixth time in the past seven years.

Chevron was in the third spot, with General Motors taking fourth place. ConocoPhillips, General Electric, Ford Motor, Citigroup, Bank of America and AT&T complete the top 10 companies in the list.

C-store and oil companies that made the list, followed by their 2007 revenues and profits, respectively, include:

· No. 2 Exxon Mobil; $372.8 billion; $40.6 billion.
· No. 3 Chevron; $210.8 billion; $18.7 billion.
· No. 5 ConocoPhillips; $178.6 billion; $11.9 billion.
· No. 16 Valero Energy; $96.8 billion; $5.2 billion.
· No. 36 Marathon Oil; $60 billion; $4 billion.
· No. 56 Sunoco; $42.1 billion; $891 million.
· No. 77 Hess; $31.9 billion; $1.8 billion.
· No. 116 Tesoro; $21.7 billion; $566 million.
· No. 134 Murphy Oil; $18.4 billion; $766.5 million.
· No. 145 CHS; $17.2 billion; $750.3 million.
· No. 342 Western Refining; $7.3 billion; $238.6 million.
· No. 395 TravelCenters of America; $6.2 billion; -$123.4 million.
· No. 405 The Pantry; $6 billion; $26.1 million.

Two other retailers were included in the extended Fortune 1000 list. They are:

· No. 588 Casey 's General Stores; $3.6 billion; $61.9 million.
· No. 763 Susser Holdings; $2.5 billion; $16.3 million.
