Apple Market Exec Passes Away

Thomas was instrumental in development of company's first c-store in 1981

BEATTYVILLE, Ky. -- Logan Thomas Jr., 54, of Lexington, Ky., passed away November 27, 2011, after a brief illness. He retired three years ago as top executive of Beattyville, Ky.-based Thomas Investments Inc., formerly known as Rogers Oil Co., which operated the Apple Market Convenience Stores.

Thomas was born September 4, 1957, to Barbara Sue Thomas and the late Logan Thomas, who preceded him in death by four months. Logan Thomas Sr., 79, died on July 17, 2011.

In addition to his mother Barbara, Logan is survived by Jane, his wife of five years, his daughter Sophia Marie and stepson Tony Tyshyn of the U.S. Marines. He is also survived by brother Michael S. Thomas and nephew John S. Thomas.

Logan was a 1975 graduate of Lee County High School and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in business administration and marketing in 1980. After graduation, he immediately entered the family business, Rogers Oil. He was instrumental in the development of the company's first convenience store in 1981, a model which quickly became the emphasis of the family business. In the early 1990s, Logan introduced Subway restaurants to the c-stores and later added many other restaurant concepts.

Thomas was a member of the Kentucky Petroleum Marketers Association.

He was also a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of many golf organizations, as this was a lifelong passion. He received numerous awards and recognitions, including Subway Franchisee of the Year and Krystal Marketer of the Year.

Besides golfing, he enjoyed traveling, UK sports and spending his retirement with his family. Thomas was a member of the Beattyville First Church of God and attended Eastland Church of God.

Services will be held in Beattyville on December 2. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Thomas' honor to God's Pantry Food Bank, Lexington, Ky.
