ALTOONA, Pa. -- Kenneth Womack, professor of English and integrative arts at Penn State Altoona, has been awarded a silver medal in the Axiom Business Book Awards for Made to Order: The Sheetz Story, which received honors in the Corporate History category.
The book traces the history of Sheetz Inc., the regional convenience-store retailer that battled the odds and cemented its name among the ranks of America's most successful private companies.
From its dairy store origins in Pennsylvania, Sheetz became a convenience-store giant, amassing 500 locations across six states and creating numerous marketing and retail innovations along the way.
Made to Order: The Sheetz Story narrates the signal ways in which the company remade itself in the face of dramatically shifting demographics and emerged as a revered and much-beloved retail phenomenon.
Presented by the Jenkins Group and IndependentPublisher.com, the Axiom Business Book Awards is a book contest intended to bring increased recognition to business books and their creators. The awards were established in 2007, with 21 categories open to authors and publishers throughout North America and overseas publishers who publish English-language business books intended for the American market.
Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz has more than $6.9 billion in revenue and operates 500 convenience stores throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. The stores offer fresh food such as Made To Order (MTO) subs, sandwiches, burgers, salads, appetizers, breakfast sandwiches and more. They also feature MTGo!
