Bush to Name Pilot's Haslam to Kennedy Center Board

Steinhagen named president of Lamar University Foundation

WASHINGTON -- President Bush will nominate James A. Haslam II, founder of the Knoxville, Tenn.-based Pilot Corp. chain of travel centers and convenience stores, among several individuals to be members of the board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington for a six-year term beginning Sept. 2, 2006.

Haslam was Bush's campaign finance chairman for Tennessee in 2004, according to the Associated Press. He is a longtime University of Tennessee Trustee has been on the Kennedy Center's Advisory Committee on the Arts since 2002. [image-nocss] And he is the father of Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam.

Pilot operates approximately 60 convenience stores in three states, and as a 50% owner with Marathon Petroleum Corp. of Pilot Travel Centers LLC, about 270 travel centers in 40 states.

Separately, the Lamar University Foundation recently named Roy Steinhagen as president of the organization from September 2006 to August 2008.

Steinhagen is chairman and COO of Steinhagen Oil Co. Inc., Beaumont, Texas, a wholesaler of Shell and Chevron retail products and owner and operator of about 30 FastLane convenience stores. He has been a member of the LU Foundation's advisory board since 1999.

The foundation serves the Beaumont university by generating significant funding from private sources and managing its assets to provide funding to supplement state appropriations. It manages endowments with a total market value of about $25 million, the majority of which is in income-producing investments managed by the Cook-Braver Investment Group, Oklahoma City. The earned income from the investments provide for the operations of academic chairs, support to academic departments, projects, and other special programs and more than 150 endowments for annual scholarship awards. And it provides for student financial assistance and faculty support that enables Lamar University to attract the most talented students and compete favorably with comparable universities.

The board of trustees is composed of alumni and friends of the university nominated by current trustees and appointed by a majority vote. Serving as ex-officio, non-voting members of the board are the university president, vice president for advancement, director of alumni affairs, executive director of the foundation, the chancellor of The Texas State University System, and the chair of the board of regents of the system.
