NEW YORK --Marathon Petroleum Corp. took the No. 1 spot across all industries in Forbes magazine's America's Best Employers list for 2016.
The list features 500 employers across 25 industry sectors. Working with online statistics provider Statista, Forbes asked more than 30,000 U.S. workers employed by companies with more than 5,000 staff members to determine, on a scale of zero to 10, how likely they were to recommend their employer to someone else. Further, how did they feel about the other employers in their industry?
- Marathon Petroleum (No. 1). Findlay, Ohio-based MPC is the nation's fourth-largest refiner with seven refineries and an oil and gas pipeline systems. Its fully integrated system moves oil and other products through the company's distribution network and midstream service businesses in the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast and Gulf Coast. And it sells Marathon-brand gasoline through approximately 5,600 independently owned gas stations across 19 states. Enon, Ohio-based Speedway LLC, an MPC subsidiary, owns and operates the nation's second-largest convenience-store chain, with approximately 2,760 c-stores in 22 states. It has 45,340 employees and $91.17 billion in sales.
Other convenience-store industry companies to make the list:
- Kwik Trip (No. 30). La Crosse, Wis.-based Kwik Trip owns and operates 515 Kwik Trip convenience stores, as well as Hearty Platter Restaurants and Tobacco Outlet Plus stores, in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. It operates as Kwik Star in Iowa to avoid competitive confusion. Kwik Trip has 9,800 employees.
- QuikTrip (No. 81). QuikTrip is a privately held convenience-store and gasoline marketer with headquarters in Tulsa, Okla. Founded in 1958, it has grown to a more than $11 billion company with approximately 700 stores in 11 states. It has 19,800 employees.
- Wawa (No. 123). Wawa, a chain of more than 700 convenience stores (including more than 440 offering gasoline), located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida, is based in Wawa, Pa. The stores offer a large fresh foodservice selection, including Wawa brands such as built-to-order hoagies and specialty beverages, coffee, breakfast sandwiches and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks. It has 22,500 employees and $9.68 billion in sales.
