Industry executive had kidney cancer

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. has announced that Joe M. Sheetz, executive vice president of store development for the large regional convenience store chain, passed away yesterday. He had been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer in February.

The family said in a letter to its vendor partners: [We] would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and cards during this difficult period. Joe always enjoyed reading the cards and toward the end, listening as family members read the cards to him.

The viewing will be held Wednesday, [image-nocss] August 23, and Thursday, August 24, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Good Funeral Home, 708 Plank Road, Altoona, Pa.

The family will have private services for Joe on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe's memory to the American Cancer Society, the family said.

The Altoona, Pa.-based company operates 322 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina.
