Kum & Go 21

Details 2009 growth; will incorporate environmental features into 2010 construction
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Kum & Go LC said that it will have opened 21 new convenience stores in six states by the end of 2009. These stores have been constructed with an eye on environmental efficiency and the intent to naturally fit into the community which they serve. Each store brings with it about 15 to 20 new associate jobs, the company said.

"We have seen remarkable growth this year. Several of our new stores are in areas we did not previously have stores. We are excited to join their communities as we continue our commitment of serving our customers," said Kum &[image-nocss] amp; Go president and CEO Kyle J. Krause.

"While we have been busy building new stores, we have also improved the buildings we construct," said John Feldman, vice president of construction for Kum & Go. "This year, we built the first Silver [Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)]-certified store in the Midwest. We look forward to incorporating environmental features into new construction next year." (Click here for previous CSP Daily News coverage.)

As part of Kum & Go's commitment to developing environmentally friendly building and operating practices, the majority of new stores are equipped with heavily insulated glass, LED cooler door lights, sun-reflecting roofs and energy-efficient heating/air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

"Looking to 2010, we are excited about the possibility for more growth and construction," said Niki DePhillips, vice president of real estate for Kum & Go. "We have been receiving very positive feedback from customers in our new stores and are looking to expand the areas we serve next year."

Stores opened in 2009 include Iowa locations in Grinnell, North Liberty, Norwalk, Riverside and Sioux City. Kum & Go achieved a significantly expanded presence in Colorado with stores in Brighton, Dacono, De Beque, Granby, Idaho Springs, Longmont and Loveland. In Arkansas, it opened two stores in Bentonville and one in Lowell. Locations in Oklahoma included Broken Arrow, Coweta and Lone Chimney. Missouri new stores included Neosho and Springfield. And it opened a store in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Family-owned Kum & Go has grown to more than 430 c-stores in 11 states (Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming). In addition to a wide selection of products, West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go provides customers a proprietary mix of products under the Hiland brand name.
