WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- A free, public rally organized by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for Mitt Romney will be at the convenience retailer Kum & Go LC's headquarters in West Des Moines, Iowa, Wednesday evening.
The event is free and open to the public, campaign aides told the Des Moines Register in announcing the event.
Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, finished third among the 2012 GOP presidential candidates in the newspaper's new Iowa Poll.
Christie is a conservative popular with Iowa Republicans, some of whom had hoped he would run for president himself, said the report. He has thrown his support behind Romney, it added.
A CSP Daily News Poll yesterday that asked, "With Herman Cain out of the race, who do you favor for the GOP presidential nomination? (Or who would you like to see President Obama run against?)" put Romney in second place, with about 25% of the more than 150 respondents voting for him. He trailed Newt Gingrich, who received the votes of more than 46% of the respondents. Ron Paul garnered 6%, Rick Perry more than 5% and Michele Bachmann 2%; more than 3% preferred another declared candidate, while 6% preferred an undeclared candidate. And 6% voted for "none."
West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go currently has approximately 440 stores in 11 states (Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming). Led by West Des Moines resident Kyle Krause, it has 4,000 employees and $2 billion in annual sales.
