Kum & Go Opens Its First Store in 2013

New, larger store in Waukee, Iowa, replaces older location

WAUKEE, Iowa -- Kum & Go LC opened a new convenience store in Waukee, Iowa, in early February--its first new store of 2013.

This newly constructed store on the north side of Interstate 80 at Exit 117 replaces an older store that had been located south of that exit. The new store brings Kum & Go's presence to three stores in Waukee and to 155 stores throughout Iowa.

The nearly 5,000-square-foot store introduces many new features both inside and outside the buildings. Inside, customers will find a larger product selection, a center checkout area with customer-focused staff, and an expanded Go Fresh Market offering fresh, made-to-order pizzas, as well as breakfast and deli sandwiches, and baked goods, all made fresh daily at Kum & Go's onsite kitchen.

Outside, a larger number of fueling positions, as well more variety in fuel offerings, give customers more choices at the pump.

"We decided to build a new store in close proximity to the original Kum & Go store to bring our newest store design to Waukee while still providing a convenient location for our existing customers," said president and CEO Kyle J. Krause. "This store layout has been designed with our customers in mind. From fresh food options to a wide selection in products, all aspects of our stores have been configured to focus on delivering fast, friendly customer service."

Another distinguishing feature of Kum & Go's new store design is the strong emphasis on sustainability. Kum & Go designs and constructs the stores with Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification in mind. Each store is submitted under these rigorous guidelines to become LEED certified. Sustainable features of this new Kum & Go store includes Solatube skylights, LED lighting both inside and outside the store, low-flow water efficient fixtures, and high energy-efficiency equipment. Each store is built using recyclable materials and locally sourced materials..

"We're passionate about the communities we serve. We demonstrate that passion first by bringing an eco-friendly store," said Krause. "And, second, by giving back. We donate 10% of our profits to educational and charitable causes every year."

Meanwhile, the company also opened a new store in Rifle, Colo., it said on Facebook.

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go is the fifth largest privately held, company-operated convenience store chain in the United States. The family-owned company began in 1959, in Hampton, Iowa, and has grown to more than 400 convenience stores in 11 states (Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming). In addition to a wide selection of products, Kum & Go provides customers a proprietary mix of products under the Hiland brand. Other proprietary product offerings include Java Ridge Premium Coffee, Napa Creek and Sea Ridge wines, Go Fresh Market sandwiches and Nuclear energy drinks.
