Maverik Opens ‘Base Camp’ in Salt Lake City
New HQ, c-store mark incorporation in Beehive State
SALT LAKE CITY -- Maverik Inc. is opening a convenience store in downtown Salt Lake City, its 279th location, reported Good4Utah. Although 279 is an odd number, the store, which it calls "Base Camp," represents something of a milestone for the retailer.
While the company moved to North Salt Lake City, Utah, years ago, it is now officially “becoming a Utah company,” Maverik CEO Tom Welch told the news outlet. "This week, we are moving our state of corporation to Utah” from Wyoming.
Maverik started in the Intermountain West nearly 88 years ago with one store in Afton, Wyo., in 1928. Reuel Call opened a two-pump gas station. That business grew, and now Maverik has 279 stores in 10 western states.
In March, the chain--which has the tagline “Adventure’s First Stop”--announced that it would open 26 more stores in the region, including expansion into the Las Vegas, Denver and Spokane, Wash., markets.
With the continued growth of the company, Maverik has opened new offices in downtown Salt Lake City with the Base Camp c-store on the ground floor..
"We are excited about our office building; we are making a statement that this is our home,” Welch said.
Maverik is also opening its first full-service Bodacious Bean barista bar in that location. It offers hot coffee, Nitro-tap cold-brew coffee, espresso, cappuccino, hot chocolate and other handcrafted drinks. The store also includes a Cinnabon bakery.
