N.Y. Industry Hall of Famer Passes Away

Wiley led Country Convenience Food Stores

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Al Wiley, 70, founder and president of Country Convenience Food Stores, Middletown N.Y., died May 26 at his home in Goshen, N.Y., of lung cancer.

His passing comes just nine days after being inducted into the New York Convenience Store Hall of Fame. Although too ill to attend the ceremony, he was inducted May 17 by the New York Association of Convenience Stores (NYACS), of which he was a founding member and former board member, said Jim Calvin, president of the organization.

Prior to forming Country Convenience, [image-nocss] Wiley served as New York/New Jersey Zone Manager for Southland Corp. from 1961 to 1974. He played a key role in building Southland's network 7-Eleven stores across Long Island.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Swanwick-Wiley of Goshen and stepson Patrick Pierpoint. He is also survived by his children, Donald Wiley of North Maple Grove, Minn., William (Scott) Wiley of Pine Bush, N.Y., Robert Wiley of Goshen, and Elizabeth Anne (Betsy) Wiley of Bloomingburg, N.Y.; stepsons Michael VonUchtrup of New York, Peter VonUchtrup of Sugar Loaf, N.Y., and stepdaughter Peggi Rumsey of Central Valley, N.Y.; his sister Joan Rose, two brothers Tom Wiley and Patrick Wiley; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda Jane Wiley and his grandson Brian Wiley.
