Convenience store chain honored for fifth consecutive year

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. -- Weekly business journal NJBIZ recently named convenience store retailer QuickChek Corp. one of the Best Places to Work in New Jersey in 2014. It is the fifth consecutive year the Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based chain has been made the list.

QuickChek enjoys the distinction of being named one of the Best Places to Work in both New Jersey and New York, making the New York State Society of Human Resource Management list in 2013 and 2014. Privately-held, the company operates 137 retail locations throughout both states.

The Best Places to Work in New Jersey list recognizes the state's top employers who show a dedication to their employees' growth and quality of life. QuickChek prides itself on giving each of its team members the opportunity to grow professionally. Most current vice presidents and all of its district leaders started out working in company stores.

"We are very proud to once again be named one of the best places to work in New Jersey," said QuickChek CEO Dean Durling. "Our mission is to be a 'Great Place to Work, a Great Place to Shop and a Great Place to Invest.' With over 3,500 team members in over 130 stores, we strive to create a positive experience and fun environment where core values are nurtured, hard work is rewarded and leadership is cultivated."

QuickChek previously made the list in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and will receive their 2014 award on May 1 in a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, N.J.

QuickChek offers its full-time employees a wide variety of affordable health and welfare benefits. These range from medical, dental and vision to life insurance, a 401(k) savings plan, fitness center reimbursement, and even pet insurance. A "Fit for Life" wellness program provides opportunities for team members to learn about their current health status through metabolic screenings, a health risk assessment and getting an annual physical. In return, qualified team members receive a discount on their medical plan costs. All team members are entitled to receive free flu shots.

There are even discounts on fruits and salads to encourage healthy eating while at work, which fits in with the company's "Fresh Convenience" branding.

QuickChek has opened 26 new stores and hiring an additional 1,100 people since 2007. Each new store creates between 35 to 50 local jobs with anticipated tax revenue of more than $1 million, both of which help boost the local economy. The company has never laid off an employee due to economic reasons, it said.

Active in the community, QuickChek has raised more than $1.5 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Relief Foundation since 2000 and recently raised $124,875 for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and $125,000 for Hurricane Sandy relief. The company supports 145 youth sports groups statewide.

Its largest team-building and community-oriented event is the annual QuickChek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America. The festival has an economic impact of $42.7 million on New Jersey's Travel & Tourism and has raised more than $2.3 million for local nonprofit organizations in the region.

Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based QuickChek has 137 stores in New Jersey and southern New York.
