Retailers Grab Inc. 5000 Spots

Plaid Pantry makes fast-growing company list for first time; Kum & Go rises; Gas Depot dips

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Plaid Pantry, Kum & Go and Gas Depot have all made the 2011 Inc. 5000, an annual ranking of the 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies in America. Plaid Pantry has entered the Inc. 5000 for the first time this year, securing the No. 4,288 spot.

Plaid Pantry's 2010 revenues were $191.8 million in 2010, compared to $155.1 million in 2007, a 24% three-year growth rate, the magazine said.

Beaverton, Ore.-based Plaid Pantry is a 107-store convenience chain based in Portland, Ore., Ore., with stores ranging from Salem, Ore., to Seattle.

Kum & Go officials announced the company's inclusion in the Inc. 5000, ranked at No. 4,372, moving up more than 200 places since last year, when it ranked at No. 4,582.

Kum & Go's 2010 revenues were $2.1 billion in 2010, compared to $1.7 billion in 2007, a 21% three-year growth rate, said the publication.

"We are excited to be selected to the Inc. 5000 for the third straight year. Our continued success and growth is directly attributed to our dedicated associates and loyal customers," said Kum & Go president and CEO Kyle J. Krause.

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go operates more than 400 stores in 11 states: Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming). In addition to a wide selection of products, Kum & Go provides customers a proprietary mix of products under the Hiland brand name. Other proprietary product offerings include Java Ridge Premium Coffee, Napa Creek and Sea Ridge wines, Go Fresh Market sandwiches and Nuclear energy drinks.

Gas Depot Oil Co. placed at No. 4,810 in the Inc. 5000 list, dropping from No. 4,742 the previous year.

Gas Depot's 2010 revenues were $170.3 million in 2010, compared to $156.6 million in 2007, a 9% three-year growth rate, said the magazine.

Morton Grove, Ill.-based Gas Depot has expertise in both retail and wholesale marketing. It operates multiple facilities throughout the Chicago area under its own proprietary label--Gas Depot. The company's wholesale distribution business extends to customers throughout the Midwest including Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. It is a licensed distributors of both branded and unbranded products include Marathon, Shell, CITGO Valero, Clark and Gas Depot.

According to Inc., there are nearly seven million employee-based firms in America and only the very best are awarded the distinction of being named to the Inc. 5000 list, an annual list of the top 5,000 private companies in the US. The rankings are based on the percentage of increase in revenue over the previous three years for private companies that have been active for a minimum of four years.
