Sam Susser Named BorderFest's Border Texan of Year 2013

Joins distinguished honorees including George W. Bush, Rick Perry, Kay Bailey Hutchison

HIDALGO, Texas -- The Border Texan of the Year Committee has named Sam L. Susser, president and CEO of Corpus Christi, Texas-based Susser Holdings Corp., as BorderFest's Border Texan of the Year.

BorderFest, South Texas' oldest and largest music, culture and heritage festival, which takes place annually in Hidalgo, Texas. Every year, BorderFest recognizes an individual who has contributed greatly to the South Texas region.

Susser joins the ranks of past distinguished honorees including then-Governor George W. Bush, Governor Rick Perry, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa and Charles Butt, among many others.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Susser leads a third-generation family business that currently operates more than 550 retail convenience stores in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma under the Stripes banner. Among the many distinguished leadership positions he holds, Susser is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas and a trustee and chairman of the Driscoll Foundation, which owns the Driscoll Children's Hospital System in South Texas. In 2009, Susser was admitted to the Texas Business Hall of Fame.

Susser will be recognized at BorderFest's Border Texan of the Year dinner on Feb. 28, 2013. All proceeds from the benefit dinner are designated for the scholarship fund of the recipient's choice. In its 23-year history, this event has raised over half a million dollars for deserving students in the Rio Grande Valley.

Susser Holdings also is majority owner and owns the general partner of Susser Petroleum Partners LP, which distributes more than 1.4 billion gallons of motor fuel annually to Stripes stores, independently operated consignment locations, c-stores and retail fuel outlets operated by independent operators and other commercial customers in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana.
