This new national organization will allow the CCSA and its affiliates to more effectively respond to the various matters impacting c-stores and their supplier partners. The affiliation process will also involve the development of a new funding model that will [image-nocss] make the CCSA and its affiliates stronger and will allow it to work more effectively with its funding partners.
Scholten first started working in the c-store industry when he was four years old, helping his father stock shelves in the chain of c-stores that his family owned. He grew up in the industry, having worked full time in c-stores since he was 12 years old. Over a period of 30 years, he has worked as an employee, a manager and, eventually, an owner of c-stores. Through these experiences, he has firsthand knowledge of how c-stores operate, and has personally experienced many of the challenges that owners, operators and employees of c-stores face.
He has a keen understanding of how difficult and frustrating it is for c-store operators when they do not have an organization like the CCSA or its affiliates to represent them when governments make decisions that have a significant impact on their business.
In addition to his c-store experience, Scholten has worked for more than eight years as a corporate/commercial lawyer in Ontario and New Brunswick and has represented several c-store owners on legal issues they have faced.
He has also worked closely with the CCSA as a board member for the past two years and has worked extensively with the Atlantic Convenience Stores Association, the CCSA regional affiliate for Atlantic Canada, for more than two years as chair of that board.
"We believe that Alex's personal and professional experiences will greatly assist the CCSA and its regional affiliates to be the voice of convenience store owners in Canada allowing them to achieve the goal of ensuring an economically viable and sustainable business environment for c-store operators in Canada," the CCSA board said.
