Sheetz Mounting W.Va. Initiative

Retailer opens recruitment, hiring, training, customer research center in Mountain State
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. -- Sheetz Inc. has begun training employees for its new convenience stores in West Virginia and the region, and it is doing so at a new recruitment, hiring and training center at the Huntington Mall, reported The Herald-Dispatch.

The center has a classroom area and food service area to train employees on how to make Sheetz specialty coffees and foods, such as muffins, burgers, sandwiches and more. It also has computers that demonstrate the touchscreen ordering that customers will find when they visit Sheetz restaurants, said the report.

"[image-nocss] We try to give the flavor of a Sheetz store," Earl Springer, manager of employee relations for Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz, told the newspaper. "We're in the process of hiring Marshall [University] students to be greeters there. We're going to try to educate customers on how to do touchscreen ordering, and they'll answer questions about Sheetz as a place to shop or work."

It might even give out free samples of foods on occasion, he added.

Sheetz recently began a push into the Mountain State (Click here for previous CSP Daily News coverage.) Because this is Sheetz's first venture into this part of West Virginia, "We had to be bold with something in that area that would give us a presence and allow us to hire and train people," Springer said.

According to the report, 12 supervisors and assistant managers have been hired for the local stores, now under construction. They will get hands-on training at a new Sheetz store in Bridgeport, W.Va., said Springer.

Sheetz stores are planned for West Huntington, Barboursville, Milton and Hurricane, W.Va. The Barboursville store is located right off the Mall Road exit of Interstate 64 and is expected to open June 11, Springer told the paper. The Milton store is expected to open July 2. The Huntington store is expected to open near the end of summer. The Hurricane store will likely open in the fall, the report said.

In the meantime, a Sheetz has as truck that "Tri-Staters" may see in their communities, where representatives will give out samples of Sheetz drinks, said the report. It will make stops at locations such as baseball games, manufacturing plants, fairs or shopping plazas. Often the samples will be free, and sometimes they'll be sold with proceeds going to a charity, Springer said. "It's a good way to get name recognition out there," he said. "That's the only thing we're going to be lacking a little bit."
