Shop n Save Location Adds Gas

Will help grocer compete with mass merchandisers

CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. -- Shop n Save supermarket customers in Connellsville, Pa., will soon be able to claim a coveted reward: discounted gasoline, reported the Connellsville Daily Courier.

With gas prices the way they are, it's a good idea to tie in a discount with groceries, Charlie Champion, assistant store manager, told the newspaper. At $3 a gallon for gas, you may as well get something out of it. It has to help. Anything you do for people has to help.

A 20,000-gallon tank and an 8,000-gallon tank for a fueling station have [image-nocss] already arrived and construction will begin Monday, said the report.

It will take five to six weeks to open, Rich Siefert, the store's co-owner, told the Courier. We see it as the best way to compete against mass merchandisers.

Siefert is working out the details of the gasoline discount program, which will offer cents-off per gallon based on in-store purchases. Additionally, customers who purchase selected items will receive additional cents off.

The card will accumulate the discount, the pump will register the discount and roll back the price automatically, Siefert said. He added that the fuel discount program will be separate from the current Greenpoints program and may involve a separate card, but details have not yet been developed.

Siefert is confident that the program will not only benefit customers, but employees, the report said. Our employees earn benefits and pensions. It's a way to ensure job security. Some of our people have been here 20 years or more, he said.
