Ten C-Store Employees Receive Yates Scholarships

Receive $3,000 for career education, more

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) announced that 10 c-store employees are recipients of the 2006 NACS Jim Yates Scholarships. The Yates Scholarship program annually recognizes employees in the convenience store industry based on their dedication to achieving excellence in retailing, strong leadership skills at the store level, and persistence in the pursuit of education.

The 2006 Jim Yates Scholarship winners are Catalina Cavazos (Texas Star Investments Inc., Corpus Christi, Texas), Carol Churchill (Sullivan Oil [image-nocss] Co., Baton Rouge, La.), Tina Dietz (Crosby Marts, Bradford, Pa.), Carmon Edward Evans (QuikTrip, Tulsa, Okla.), Vicki Harris (Fastrip, Springfield, Mo.), Eric Hoeft (Bobby & Steve's Auto World, Minneapolis),Gail Ladd (General Equities dba Foodbag, Lebanon, Conn.), Elisa Maggio (Lone Star Food Stores, operated by Douglass Distributing, Sherman, Texas), Brenda Rohn (Gas America Services Inc., Kokomo, Ind.), and James Wisniewski (Wawa Inc., Wawa, Pa).

The Yates Scholarship is distributed by NACS in honor of the late Jim Yates, founder of E-Z Mart Stores Inc. Each winner will receive a $3,000 for costs of career educationcommunity college or a four-year collegeand complimentary registration and travel to the NACS Show 2006, which will take place October 8-11 in Las Vegas.

NACS is pleased to be able to award scholarships to truly outstanding individuals who are working hard to achieve excellence in retailing while persistently pursuing their education, said Jay Ricker, president of Ricker Oil Co. and administrator for the Convenience Store Foundation for Education and Research, which oversees the Yates Scholarship Program.

Many leaders of our industry started at the store level. The Yates Scholarship gives opportunities to exceptional convenience store employees who might not otherwise have seen this level of education in their future. It's wonderful to see that the winners are people of all ages and backgrounds. I'm very proud to be a part of this wonderful program, said Erin Mitchell, Yates Scholarship program administrator.
