Valero's Midwest Push

Station rebrands from Sunoco as part of regional expansion strategy

FLINT, Mich. -- A Valero Energy Corp. gas station is the first in the Flint, Mich., area and part of a concentrated Midwest push by the San Antonio-based independent oil refiner-marketer, said The Flint Journal.

Named for the Alamothe famous battle site originally called Mission San Antonio de ValeroValero's dark teal sign with a wavy yellow accent could become an increasingly familiar sight on area street corners, the report said.

The new station replaced a Sunoco station at the Flint Township location, across the street from [image-nocss] a Kroger grocery store and fueling station. The first station in Michigan, in Dearborn, was converted September 26, Valero spokesperson Mary Rose Brown told the newspaper.

We have been aggressively growing our branded wholesale network on the East and West coasts for the past couple of years and have just moved into the Great Lakes region. We currently have 300-plus sites in this area and are excited about expanding our network throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, Brown said.

The Midwest push follows the September 2005 acquisition of a refinery in Lima, Ohio, which gave Valero a gateway to the attractive upper Midwest market, according to the report, citing the company's Web site. The Lima refinery was one of four acquired in the $8-billion acquisition of Premcor Inc., boosting Valero's refineries to 18.

Valero operates more than 5,500 retail and branded wholesale outlets in the United States (42 states), Canada and the Caribbean under brand names including Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar and Beacon.
