The first Walmart Neighborhood Market, a smaller retail format than its traditional Walmart Supercenters, opened in 1998. The new location is approximately 41,000 square feet in size.

The mass retailer recently discontinued its rollout of Walmart Express, its 10,000-to-15,000-square-foot convenience-store-type format, in favor of the Neighborhood Market stores and is converting existing Walmart Express stores to Neighborhood Markets. The company is testing a 5,200-square-foot c-store and gas station format called Walmart To Go at one location in Arkansas, as well as the Walmart on Campus concept at several colleges.

The Neighborhood Market format offers fresh produce and a full line of groceries from leading brand names, including organic selections. It also features bakery, self-service deli, prepared meal options, health and beauty aids, baby and pet products and cleaning supplies and a MoneyCenter. Customers also can shop on Walmart.com, and many of the products can be shipped for free via the Walmart Pickup service to the new Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has 11,202 stores of several formats under 71 banners in 27 countries and e-commerce websites in 11 countries, with fiscal-year 2014 sales of more than $473 billion.
