ABERDEEN, N.J. -- As part of its push into central and northern New Jersey, Wawa has opened its newest store in Aberdeen Township, reported The Asbury Park Press.
The convenience store chain has several locations in Monmouth and Ocean counties. The Aberdeen store is the company's 234th in New Jersey. Wawa also has stores in Pennsylvania, where it is headquartered, and in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
New Jersey is the heart of Wawa land. We've been there since 1966, when we opened our first store in New Jersey, Lori Bruce, [image-nocss] spokesperson for the Wawa, Pa,-based company, told the newspaper. This iskind of pushing the Central, North Jersey market for us.
Wawa plans to open stores in Middlesex County in South River, Old Bridge and South Brunswick, Bruce added. We think there's lots of long-term opportunity in the state.
The new 5,600-sq.-ft. store includes a gas station capable of serving 16 vehicles at once. As part of its expansion efforts, the company has made gasoline a significant part of its operations, the report said. Of the more than 550 Wawa stores, 203 of them sell gasoline, Bruce said; 10 years ago, Wawa began installing gasoline stations in all of its new stores.
We have a lot of pumps there. We can serve a lot of customers. So we are positioned for higher volume, she said.
While the company's new locations all have gasoline stations attached, Wawa is not phasing out its older stores just because they don't have room to add gasoline pumps, said the report. We've been doing foodservice as the heart of our business, and then when we added gas, it just completed that convenience picture, Bruce said.
