Where Do Millennials Want to Work?
Jun. 29, 2016NEW YORK -- Two convenience-store chains were named to Fortune magazine's second annual list of the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials. Both chains are companies known for their forward-looking hiring practices, allowing the companies to rise above several high-profile supermarket chains.
Rankings for the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials are based entirely upon employees' own feedback and are selected from a database of more than 600 organizations that have been certified by Great Place to Work.
To determine the list, Fortune asked Great Place to Work to survey more than 88,000 millennials (born 1981 or later) who rated their organizations on 58 workplace quality questions. Employees considered the sincerity of managers' support for people's personal and professional lives, how transparent communication is, people's ability to be themselves at work and to invest in their lives outside work and the meaning they get from their jobs, among other factors.
Millennials' anonymous responses resulted in a total score for each company, which was compared to the benchmark for organizations of that size. Companies needed to employ at least 50 millennials and achieve a 95% confidence level and margin of error of 5% or less in order to be eligible.

QuikTrip
QuikTrip Corp., Tulsa, Okla., took the top spot (No. 31) for the convenience-store industry on the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials list. When ranked by millennials as a percentage of the company’s total workforce, QuikTrip came in at No. 4.
- Total number of employees: 20,342
- Number of millennials: 17,269 (85%)
According to one millennial employee, “Quiktrip is a company that cultivates a sense of camaraderie between its co-workers. Many employees and members of the management staff will go out of their way to help with any professional or personal issues anyone may be struggling with. During a time when I was struggling with my lactation production, my area supervisor took the time on a particularly busy and stressful day to make time for me to have my quiet time to pump. It may seem minor, but it meant the world to have management take such an interest in something so personal with no benefit to them.”
Another millennial said, “This job is unique because of the many opportunities QuikTrip offers to employees to grow and become a better person.”
Sheetz
Sheetz Inc., Altoona, Pa., at No. 35, was the next company to represent the c-store industry on the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials list.

- Number of millennials: 9,751 (65%)
“You are never stuck doing just one thing. They constantly have you doing different things so you are trained in all the fields such as register, drive-thru kitchen and running the sales floor. It definitely keeps working here interesting,” said one millennial employee.
“It is still a family-run company, so they treat everyone like family. After every five years of service, they take all their employees to a getaway at a very nice resort, which includes a lot of nice planned activities. It is a super nice gesture to make their employees feel valued,” said another millennial.
