Biometric Traction

Radiant selects BIO-key for POS solution

ATLANTA -- Radiant Systems Inc. has selected BIO-key International Inc.'s fingerprint identification technology for integration into its biometrically enabled Point of Sale (POS) terminals.

Radiant Systems was a first mover in the introduction of biometrically enabled POS systems in 2005, it said. After two years of market experience, Radiant recognized the need to upgrade its biometric software platform to accommodate larger customers with greater accuracy while allowing for device independence among the many applications and form factors.

We evaluated a wide range of biometric options and selected BIO-key's VST solution because it delivered superior speed and accuracy and works with every major fingerprint reader, said Bob Stone, director of product management for Atlanta-based Radiant Systems. Given the strong interest and increasing demand we see for biometrics across our product line, we recognized the need to upgrade to a solution that can be deployed in the retail environment, where system response time, user convenience and accuracy are critical, no matter how large the user base.

With the BIO-key fingerprint biometric solution integrated into the POS terminal, identification cards and passwords are replaced with the touch of an employee's or customer's finger to positively establish their identity to the POS system. In addition to being more convenient, the BIO-key solution eliminates the possibility of sharing passwords or identity cards and ensures that manager overrides are properly authenticated.

We are pleased that Radiantrecognized the value of our VST solution and embedded it into their application, said Michael DePasquale, CEO of Wall, N.J.-based BIO-key. We believe this contract reflects the traction we are seeing in the commercial and civil markets for our biometric technologies.

BIO-key International develops and delivers identification solutions and information services to law enforcement departments, public safety agencies, government and private-sector customers. Its mobile wireless technology provides first responders with critical, reliable, real-time data and images from local, state and national databases. BIO-key's scalable biometric finger identification technology accurately identifies and authenticates users of wireless and enterprise data to improve security, convenience and privacy and to reduce identity theft.

Radiant Systems provides technology to the hospitality and retail industries. Its hardware and software solutions are deployed in more than 85,000 restaurants, retail stores, cinemas, convenience stores, fuel centers and other customer-service venues across more than 100 countries.
