Gilbarco Driving EMV Transactions at the Pump

Ultramar among retailers using more than 16,000 FlexPay EMV CRINDs worldwide
MONTREAL -- Gilbarco Veeder-Root said that North America's first EMV (EuroPay, MasterCard, Visa) transactions at the gasoline pump began in late October when customers at an Ultramar station in Montreal, Quebec, used their chip and PIN (personal identification number) cards at the fuel island. The Gilbarco FlexPay EMV CRIND systems installed in Gilbarco Encore S gasoline pumps encrypted the information from each card's chip as well as the PIN that the customer entered on the keypad.

"It is important to us that we provide our customers with the highest level of security possible [image-nocss] when fueling at an Ultramar station," said Sebastien Bousquet, manager of applications development at Ultramar. "Our partnership with Gilbarco has allowed us to achieve EMV compliance well in advance of market deadlines and be the first to provide our customers with this extra security."

EMV is a global standard for credit and debit payment cards based on chip card (also known as smart card) technology. The standard is designed to protect consumer card and PIN data against theft and fraud. EMVco, the organization that administers the testing and approvals process to evaluate compliance with the specifications, is currently owned by American Express, JCB, MasterCard and Visa.

More than 16,000 Gilbarco FlexPay EMV CRIND terminals are installed worldwide, including sites with leading retailers in Canada, according to Mark Williams, marketing manager of dispenser applications at Gilbarco Veeder-Root.

These pay-at-the-pump terminals meet EMV 1 & 2, PCI PIN Entry Device (PED) and Interac requirements. They are available factory-installed in new dispensers or as retrofit kits to upgrade existing dispensers with an integrated appearance. A modular design enables service on individual components instead of replacing the entire payment system. The systems help protect data with physical and logical security. Physical security features disable operation in the event of device tampering. Logical security features encrypt data at the point of card and PIN entry and throughout the system.

"This EMV achievement illustrates our long history of delivering payment technology that solves complex regulatory requirements for our customers in a flexible, cost-effective manner," said Williams. "Retailers such as Ultramar will benefit from our rich experience delivering these solutions in other global markets."

Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root is a worldwide technology leader for retail and commercial fueling operations. It offers a broad range of integrated solutions from the forecourt to the convenience store and head office.
