NCR touts compartmentalized POS, introduces self-serve profit centers
CHICAGO -- Showcasing both a new point-of-sale (POS) with a modular, internal construct, as well as new self-serve kiosks for DVD rentals and post office capabilities, NCR Corp. gave visitors at this year's NACS convention and trade show a peek into its vision of the future.
Gary Dalton, senior product manager, RealPOS integrated terminals, demonstrated the Dayton, Ohio-based company's latest POS workstation, the NCR RealPOS 70XRT (extreme retail technology). Featuring Intel technology, the solution focuses on efficiency and serviceability. Dalton opened the device and showed how key components [image-nocss] slide out for ease of replacement.
In a press release, the company said the NCR RealPOS 70XRT can reduce energy consumption by up to 50% over previous generation POS terminals.
The device is built with an "EZ-Glide" blade system that allows components like the computer's motherboard to slide completely out of the box for "tool-free access" to internal components. The new device also allows for the addition of a touch screen for customer interfacing, as well as a slot for paper signage.
Also in its booth, NCR displayed a kiosk that dispensed DVDs and another that customers could use to meter and pay for postage.
In other NCR news, the company said that two independent research entities, Retail Banking Research (RBR) and ESP Payments Practice, recently gathered data from bankers and deployers to name the company a leader on two fronts. First, RBR's "Global ATM Market and Forecasts to 2013" report named NCR the largest ATM manufacturer globally with an installed-base market share of 30.1%.
Likewise, in the recently released ESP Payments Practice report, "The Future of ATMs: 8th Annual Market Tracking Study," NCR is named the market leader in ATM shipments to the financial industry in the United States. Based on ESP's market research, in 2007 NCR shipped more ATMs to U.S. banks, credit unions and other financial institutions than any other ATM provider worldwide.
