MACS Picks Up Shopkick

Through ExxonMobil, becomes a U.S. pioneer of the loyalty technology

WASHINGTON -- As an ExxonMobil partner, Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores (MACS) has announced its stores will now offer shopkick Inc.'s loyalty program.

Exxon Mobil Corp. announced last week that it was the first in the industry to offer the program (see Related Content below for previous CSP Daily News coverage).

ExxonMobil is the only company in the convenience and fuel industry to currently make shopkick available to its customers, and through MACS' partnership with ExxonMobil, the shopkick loyalty program became available in Washington, D.C., stores on March 29, 2012.

Shopkick, the nation's largest location-based rewards program, is a free mobile app for iPhone and Android smartphone users that rewards its consumers with "kicks" for entering retail stores. Kicks can be redeemed for gift cards, song downloads, restaurant vouchers, and deals only for shopkick users, as well as to donate money to nonprofit organizations. Shopkick users can collect additional rewards by scanning barcodes of featured products while in the store.

"We're excited to be among the first convenience stores to offer this mobile app perk to our customers," said Derek Gaskins, senior vice president of marketing and merchandising for MACS. "Exceeding expectations is our goal in everything we do, and keeping up with innovative technology and ways to offer value to our customers is a top priority."

The app does not use GPS-technology, but rather uses smartphones' ability to recognize a high-pitch signal emitted by a device installed in each participating store. When a customer opens the app and walks into the store, the smartphone registers the signal and the customer wins kicks.

Based in Richmond, Va., MACS is a leading c-store operator in Maryland and Virginia. With a network of approximately 300 company-owned and dealer locations, in addition to its wholesale fuel distribution network, MACS is one of the largest convenience store networks and fuel distributors in the region.
